The Plot: Desperate to save what is left of his family, a battle-scarred veteran is hired at the height of the Great Depression to smuggle a fortune in gold across 100 miles of impenetrable wilderness.
Samuel Murphy Takes on the Formidable Warden Clancy!
Ethan Hawke delivered a remarkable and bold performance in the film, and I was impressed by how well he suited the period setting. It’s hard to believe that the story isn’t based on true events, which surprised me. The warden of the work camp was strong and an effective leader, but something felt off about him—was I right? I won’t reveal my thoughts until you see the film for yourselves. Warden Clancy was genuinely impressed by how Samuel carried himself; his demeanor and character led Clancy to offer him a smuggling opportunity that ultimately reunited him with his daughter, whom he had to leave behind.
Meeting Anna
Anna was an indigenous runaway who joined Samuel and his companions on their arduous journey to the meeting place for the gold. Initially, the group was skeptical of her presence and intentions, unsure whether they could trust her. However, Anna proved to be a pivotal character in the film, as she sought to escape the challenges she faced in her own life.
Despite the crew’s doubts, it became clear that Anna was trustworthy and a valuable asset to their group. She took on the role of caregiver, cooking meals and tending to the injured men. Unfortunately, the way the crew treated her was disheartening; they often expected her to fulfill traditional gender roles, such as cooking and gathering supplies like water and food.
This portrayal was troubling, as it reflected a broader issue of how women are sometimes viewed and treated in society. Anna deserved respect and recognition for her contributions, rather than being relegated to the status of a servant or object. It is essential to acknowledge the strength and resilience of female characters like Anna, who navigate complex situations while challenging the stereotypes imposed upon them.
The Weight Of It All
Overall, this was a good movie, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I appreciated it. While I believe it’s a one-time experience for me, I chose to watch it as a mystery film for a Screen Unseen event. It was enjoyable, but I wouldn’t opt to see it again on my own.
The film’s title, “The Weight,” encapsulates its essence perfectly. The characters bear a significant burden, both literally and figuratively, as they navigate the treacherous situations they face. They endure the challenges of carrying heavy bricks of gold through the wilderness, symbolizing the immense weight on their shoulders. This weight represents not only the physical load but also the emotional and psychological struggles they must confront throughout their journey. The film effectively conveys the gravity of their circumstances, making it clear that the title is a reflection of the profound challenges they endure.

I loved this review! It was such a great movie, and the performances are definitely Oscar-worthy! Whenever I feel emotionally connected to a film, it’s a great film! And I was definitely emotionally into this one!
I completely understand that feeling you describe—when I feel a strong connection to the actors’ portrayals of their roles. It ignites a powerful energy within me that is beyond words, and I recognize that this is a film worth watching repeatedly!
