The Plot: Rick, a washed-up wedding singer, and Danny, a fading boy band star, bond over music and a late-night jam session. When Danny turns Rick’s song into a hit, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves.
Danny Wilson
Seeing a movie with Nick Jonas was an enjoyable experience. The last film I watched with him was the 2023 release titled “Love Again.” I might have seen something else afterward, but I can’t quite recall what it was.
In “Power Ballad,” Nick Jonas plays the character Danny, a songwriter struggling to create lyrics for his songs. During this creative block, he encounters a fan named Rick, who is eager to collaborate on lyrics. Together, they brainstorm ideas, and Rick contributes a classic line that Danny ultimately incorporates into his song. This song unexpectedly becomes a smash hit.
Danny believed that using Rick’s line was acceptable since they were just brainstorming and it didn’t feel personal at the time. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the situation is much more complex than Danny initially thought, revealing deeper themes of recognition and artistic integrity.
Rick Power
Paul Rudd delivered a standout performance as a hilariously engaging character in this film. Renowned for his comedic talent, Rudd has a remarkable ability to evoke laughter and create memorable cinematic experiences in both leading and supporting roles. The significance of his character’s last name, “Power,” resonated deeply with me, symbolizing his character’s potential to craft incredible lyrics and songs. However, he chose to prioritize family life over his musical aspirations, showcasing a poignant sacrifice. With Paul Rudd portraying Rick Power, the film beautifully captures the essence of a once-celebrated musical sensation navigating the complexities of fame and personal fulfillment.
The Power Ballad
Rick Power, a character whose last name aptly reflects his potential, possessed the remarkable ability to compose and write musical hits. However, he never pursued this talent full-time, opting instead to join a boy band. This decision left him feeling deeply disappointed in himself for not fully embracing his craft, as he limited his musical endeavors to performing at weddings and various events whenever his band secured a gig.
Despite his regrets about not following through on his dreams, Rick expressed that he would never have sacrificed his aspirations for his daughter. In moments of heightened emotion, we often say things we don’t truly mean. Yet, this film illustrates that Rick Power could have had both his ice cream and eaten it too, without having to choose one path over the other.
In some instances, it is indeed possible to achieve both personal and professional fulfillment, while in others, we may find ourselves unable to initiate either. Rick Power embodies the essence of a “Power Ballad,” as he consistently tells compelling stories through his music, reflecting the complexities of his life and the choices he made.

Awesome review! I’m so glad to read it now. I’m very anxious to see it!
Welcome! You will absolutely enjoy it and laugh! I could distinctly hear your laughter during certain scenes while I was watching it. From knowing you, I can immediately tell what will make you laugh or leave you surprised!
I find it funny already. Casting Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, who have been successful musicians since they were late teenagers, as a songwriter struggling with creative block. I’m game for this one. Thanks!!
Happy to help guide you in your movie-watching process! 🙂
Love the review. Love Paul Rudd and will add this to must see list.
