“Deep Water” Movie Review

The Plot: A group of international passengers en route from Los Angeles to Shanghai is forced to make an emergency landing in shark-infested waters. Now they must work together in hopes of overcoming the frenzy of sharks drawn to the wreckage.

 Too Much CGI Like For Real!

The film’s premise revolves around a massive airplane that unexpectedly makes an emergency landing in the ocean, a scenario that initially promises tension and excitement. However, unlike the classic “Jaws,” which masterfully portrayed the terror of shark attacks with realism, this film falls short in execution. The shark attacks, which should have been the most frightening element, instead appear cartoonish and unrealistic, resembling inflatable pool toys rather than menacing predators. 

Having watched numerous shark films, from “Jaws” to “The Shallows” and “Deep Blue Sea,” I found those movies effectively conveyed the horror of shark encounters through believable special effects. In stark contrast, the sharks in this film lacked authenticity, diminishing the suspense and thrill that such a premise should evoke. I was genuinely disappointed, as the portrayal of the sharks was meant to be the film’s most terrifying aspect, yet it failed to deliver on that promise, leaving me underwhelmed and dissatisfied.

Sharknado? Nope!

This film was marketed as a horror/suspense thriller, but the tension dissipated quickly after the plane crashed into the ocean. The initial excitement of being surrounded by killer sharks vanished as soon as we saw the first shark, which looked incredibly fake. I was disappointed by how the last 40 minutes were filmed; all the anticipation built up from classic shark films was completely wasted.

The Survivors of It All

Despite the numerous survivors of this brutal shark attack, the standout aspect for me was the consistent portrayal of Ben’s character throughout the film. He demonstrated remarkable composure, remaining cool, calm, and collected while striving to ensure everyone’s safety amidst the chaos of the airplane disintegrating into hundreds of pieces, with loved ones, teammates, and family members potentially scattered across the ocean. However, I was ultimately unimpressed with the film as a whole. The beginning was engaging, but the last 40 minutes, which were meant to be suspenseful, fell flat and lacked tension. In my opinion, this movie does not deliver the excitement one might expect.
