Plot: The remarkable true story of eleven-year-old Sarah Rector (Naya Desir-Johnson), an African American girl born in Oklahoma Indian Territory in the early 1900s, who believes there is oil beneath the barren land she’s allotted and whose faith is proven right.
Big “Little Sarah Rector”
I could never have anticipated that an 11-year-old girl like Sarah Rector would exhibit such remarkable intelligence, compassion, intuition, and savvy. Her life story serves as a testament to the rich and often untold history that exists in our world. If all children her age demonstrated such maturity and conviction, it would be truly inspiring. Sarah was an extraordinary young individual who stood firmly in her beliefs and followed her heart. In life, we often experience intuitions that we may struggle to articulate, and Sarah exemplified this beautifully.

Bert
Initially, I felt apprehensive about this character, but Sarah’s insight opened my eyes. She pointed out a harsh truth: people who assume you have nothing will offer no assistance and often behave as if you’re completely invisible. I like to call this phenomenon “temporary amnesia.” Yet, when they discover you’ve suddenly come into wealth or “struck gold,” that amnesia evaporates, and they rush back into your life like moths to a flame. I see these individuals as opportunists. This leads me to wonder: is Bert truly one of them, or is he a fundamentally good man who masquerades as a villain to assist Sarah? His character creates a psychological labyrinth, leaving you questioning whether he’s genuinely noble or capriciously wicked.

“I Ain’t Sellin'”
Young Sarah Rector faced a tough situation as she watched children she cared about suffer and even die, largely because she discovered oil. It was heartbreaking that no one would believe her or take the time to investigate. At one point, in a desperate attempt to protect her family and her cherished dog, she almost decided to sell her oil. This was a truly monumental sacrifice for an 11-year-old child, especially since it meant risking millions of dollars. Yet, despite her youth, Sarah showed a maturity beyond her years. She stood firm in her beliefs and fought not just for herself, but for those she loved dearly. Her courage in such trying circumstances is truly inspiring.

What History Can Teach Us …ALL!
The rich history of Sarah Rector teaches us never to underestimate anyone, regardless of their age, race, or background. Assumptions can make you appear inexperienced and foolish compared to those you might view as immature or less intelligent. It’s vital to let others have their misconceptions while you stay focused on your own path. With dedication, your dreams and aspirations can be fulfilled. You must desire your success, feel it deeply, and believe in it as strongly as you believe in yourself—just as Sarah Rector did. Her wealth came not only from her inherited land or oil assets, but from the love and support of her family.
