The Plot: Every night, a shepherd reads aloud a murder mystery, pretending his sheep can understand it. When he is found dead, the sheep realize at once that it was a murder and think they know everything about how to go about solving it.
Mr. George Hardy
Watching Hugh Jackman play a role other than Wolverine evokes a complex reaction in me. Once an actor embodies a superhero, they become forever associated with that character in the minds of audiences. No matter the variety of roles they undertake in between, the superhero persona tends to overshadow their other performances. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced with Jackman, whose portrayal of Wolverine has left an indelible mark on popular culture.
However, in this new role as a shepherd, I find a fascinating intersection between his past and present characters. Jackman’s character, Mr. George Hardy, demonstrates an extraordinary level of care and compassion for his flock of sheep. He nurtures them, administers medication to the sick, and treats them with the same respect and love one would afford to fellow human beings. This portrayal resonates deeply with me, as it reflects a superhero-like quality of protection and guardianship.
A Movie Made For All Ages!!!
The depth of his character is further illustrated by his nightly ritual of reading murder mysteries aloud to his sheep, believing they can understand him. This whimsical notion adds a layer of charm and absurdity to the narrative, showcasing his imaginative spirit. The fact that the sheep can talk, unbeknownst to George, adds a delightful twist to the story, emphasizing the theme of connection and understanding between beings, regardless of species.
Jackman’s ability to embody such a nurturing figure speaks volumes about his range as an actor. It highlights his innate capacity to portray characters who are not just heroes in the traditional sense but also guardians of those who cannot protect themselves. This role, while different from Wolverine’s, still embodies the essence of heroism through compassion and dedication. It challenges the audience to reconsider what it means to be a hero, suggesting that true heroism can manifest in the quiet, everyday acts of kindness and care.
A Much Deeper Meaning …
In conclusion, while I initially felt disturbed by seeing Jackman in a role outside of Wolverine, I have come to appreciate the depth and richness of his character as a shepherd. His portrayal serves as a reminder that heroism exists in many forms, and sometimes, the most profound impact comes from the love and care we extend to those around us, whether they are human or animal.

I wasn’t interested in this film until I decided to join a friend. What a pleasant suprise!!!! Loved it and tears at the end (happy)
Glad that you enjoyed it!
I knew this one would be funny. Thanks!
You got it!
I really liked this movie – first time when it was the Screen Unseen and second time with a friend. Just quirky enough to be enjoyable without being saccharine. Human actors were great – especially Jackman and Emma Thompson. The voice actors for the sheep 🐑 were really great.
I cannot agree more! I knew Regina Hall was one of the voices – and it was CONFIRMED when the credits rolled! I was right!
When we saw this preview I immediately wanted to see this one! I love Hugh and think he’s a great actor aside from Wolverine so it’s nice to see him back on screen. Looking forward to this one.
