Plot: A new porter (Ben Radcliffe) forms an odd bond with the youngest daughter, Rose Davenport (Thomasin McKenzie), of a well-known UK family. The Davenport family, headed by Lord (Damian Lewis) and Lady Davenport (Katherine Waterston), deals with the epic disaster of the wedding of their eldest daughter to her caddish cousin.
A Stupid Spoof That Is Beyond Being Spoofed!
When considering this spectacle, one might wonder where to begin the discussion. Initially, I was quite enthusiastic after seeing the previews, but now that I have experienced the film, my feelings are more mixed. While I understand the trailers may not have fully captured the essence of the film, as noted during the AMC Screen Unseen event, I found the overall execution to be quite unconventional. It seems to merge elements reminiscent of Downton Abbey, Airplane!, and The Naked Gun movies, creating a uniquely entertaining experience that may not resonate with everyone.

Laughter Galore to Its Rear Bottom Core!
Have you ever considered that spoof movies are designed to parody existing films? It can be a bit challenging to articulate this, but when someone tries too hard to be humorous, it often falls flat for the audience. Conversely, the exaggerated antics of the actors in these films can elicit genuine laughter. We find ourselves thinking phrases like, “What just happened?” or, “I can’t believe they did that!” While I appreciate the creativity involved, I found this particular movie to be quite extreme compared to other spoofs like the Scary Movie series. It seemed to stretch the limits of believability, leaving me wondering how anyone could portray such outrageous behavior while still managing to connect with audiences.

The Davenports
I’ve never watched a single episode of “Downton Abbey,” but after seeing this film, I can almost grasp its essence without any prior knowledge. The lengths to which the Davenports go to remain at Fackham Hall and preserve their family legacy are astonishingly absurd—sick, twisted, and insane, yet presented comically. For example, the idea of having to marry my own cousin is beyond comprehension. It left me wondering, “What on earth?” The sheer ridiculousness of the situation was so over-the-top that it became genuinely funny. The film cleverly highlights the absurdities of social expectations and familial obligations, making for an entertaining experience.

I enjoyed it because I like “stupid” comedy movies, but I wish I hadn’t saw the trailer first.
Do you REALLY believe that ALL the good parts were in the trailer? I don’t.
Not all of them of course, but a lot of the funniest ones I had seen several times.
I enjoyed it but didn’t laugh hard like I did at Naked Gun. Now that movie was hilarious. I was hoping it would make me belly laugh but it didn’t.
I completely agree with you. Some movies have the power to evoke strong emotions, while others fall short, no matter how hard they try. That’s exactly the message I aimed to convey in my review, and you hit the nail on the head with your understanding of it!
Ohhhh I’m saddened to read this as I was genuinely looking foward to this movie. I did not like the latest Naked Gun, in fact I stopped it 25mins in. Oh well we shall see how I feel about with this one …I’ll report back when I see it!
Yeah – you do that!
I think I’ll pass…
Made that easy for you huh?
Like you, I haven’t watched an episode of “Downtown Abbey” which I’m shocked that I stayed to watch. Some parts of the movie was funny, and some just totally BS which added another layer of humor. This is a one and done type of movie for me.
Me as well. A “one and SO done.” I actually was falling asleep in it to be brutally honest with you!
As usual 💯
What? I am right again – as usual? Is that what you’re saying?
I was completely let down by this film. I went in thinking I was going to laugh so hard that I would piss myself. There were only a few chuckles to be had. BUMMER!!!
I must say that it always brings me GREAT joy when you expect such HIGH reguard for films and then when your dreams are shot down, you get disappointed. Rare moments! LOL
The trailer was hilarious – but I am gonna hold off until it’s free.
VERY wise non-spoof choice you’re making!
This movie was horrible. Very few chuckles for me. I could’ve easily stayed home.
I wouldn’t say horrible – because if I had my choice between THIS and HIM – I would SOOOOO choose this anytime, any day,and any damn where!
Well, I’m not comparing it to any other movie. HIM was horrible as well.
I was just throwing it out there is it was any other horrible movie versus this one – which would you choose? Just for curosity.
I got tired of the “Scary Movie” sequels, and they’re making another one, but yes, it’s a spoof of the period Brit movies/shows which we have seen. The fact that I’m not a Brit, some of the jokes don’t work for us here. Overall, it was funny, and it’s one of those that I will watch if it happens to be on TV. The same goes for “Naked Gun” and “Airplane.” Even though the latter is my fave, I haven’t been able to get my wife to watch it. Also, “Hot Shots” is another one I like as well. The sequel is even funnier!!!
It’s hard to believe you haven’t been able to get your wife to watch “Airplane!” What do you think is holding her back? Also, I’m curious to hear your thoughts on Liam Neeson’s take in “Naked Gun.”
