The Plot: When a woman crashes at an empty Italian villa, posing as the owner’s fiancée, she discovers an unexpected romance that could transform her life.
Pretending to Have… “The Life.”
The film presented Anna’s character in a rather misleading way, portraying her as a struggling woman striving for financial independence. From the moment the movie began, she appeared to be a wealthy, successful heiress, only for us to discover that she was actually impoverished and living paycheck to paycheck, with house-sitting as her sole source of income. The film never clarified whether her house-sitting jobs were exclusively for affluent families. Still, it was evident that Anna yearned to embody the glamorous life she had always envisioned for herself, especially after her plans fell apart.
However, Anna’s desire to live this fantasy led her to cross ethical boundaries. She pretended to own luxurious clothing, lavish beds, and expensive cars, using possessions that did not belong to her in an attempt to feel loved, important, and valued. This approach was misguided, as it trapped her in a fantasy world where she felt entitled to things she had no right to touch or use.
Claire: The Best Friend
Her best friend, Claire, provided delightful comedic relief throughout the film, evident in the few telephone calls, video calls, and text messages that showcased her vibrant personality. Claire consistently reminded Anna of the importance of integrity while house-sitting, emphasizing that she should respect the property and its owners. She advised Anna to either bring her own belongings or use the homeowners’ items with a sense of gratitude and respect, especially if they specified what she could wear, eat, or use.
Claire’s guidance highlighted a crucial ethical principle: taking liberties with someone else’s possessions to fabricate an image of wealth is not only inappropriate but also disrespects the hard work of those who have genuinely earned their lifestyle. This theme resonates deeply in Anna’s journey, which serves as a cautionary tale about the perils of living in a constructed reality. It emphasizes the value of authenticity in one’s life, reminding viewers that true fulfillment comes from embracing one’s reality rather than fabricating an illusion.
Finding Love Unexpectedly
Anna met Matteo in a hotel bar, where they both found solace in their shared love for Tuscany, Matteo’s home. As they conversed, Anna learned that Matteo’s beautiful villa was currently unoccupied, and he was not living there at the moment. This revelation sparked a reckless idea in Anna’s mind; she felt compelled to take it upon herself to make the villa her own, disregarding boundaries. She envisioned herself exploring his personal belongings, rearranging his space, and immersing herself in the comforts of a life that was not hers.
Matteo, with his encouraging demeanor, inspired Anna to pursue her dreams and seek a path to make her lifelong aspirations a reality. However, the narrative took an unexpected turn, typical of a romantic comedy. As Anna spent more time in the villa, she developed feelings for someone very close to Matteo. This person, whom she encountered daily, became a source of emotional connection, in sharp contrast to her initial encounter with Matteo at the bar, where she never anticipated seeing him again.
The complexity of her emotions deepened as she navigated the blurred lines between a potential one-night stand and a genuine connection with someone she had not expected to fall for. The juxtaposition of her fleeting encounter with Matteo and her evolving feelings for his acquaintance highlighted the unpredictable nature of love and attraction. Anna’s journey became a testament to the unexpected ways in which relationships can develop, challenging her initial intentions and leading her to confront her true desires.

This gives a lot of “While You Were Sleeping” vibes – which is not a bad thing. I loved Sandra Bullock in that film—she was adorable and endearing. There are so many plot parallels with this movie, and Halle is just as adorable and endearing.
Yes, I really like Sandra Bullock. I visit her house a lot because it is close to mine. Halle did a great job playing the part in the movie!
Interesting. I loved that movie too
I’m 50/50 about going to see this. Your reviews do help because I try not to watch the trailers or much of them. How was the chemistry between the two leads? I read somewhere that it was giving bro/sis vibes.
Thank you for your kind words! It’s rewarding to know that my reviews can be helpful to others. Regarding your question about the sibling vibe, I must say there’s absolutely none! The chemistry between Anna and Michael is distinctly romantic and far from anything sibling-like.
Their connection is portrayed exactly as it should be for two individuals who unexpectedly fall in love. While a close bond akin to siblings can enhance their relationship, in this film, I did not sense any sibling-like dynamics between them. Their interactions are charged with a palpable romantic tension that clearly sets them apart from a sibling relationship.
Definitely one to see!!! It’s very fun and heartfelt.
I agree – I didn’t think I’d like it as much as I did to be honest!
This is a great review!!! I really want to see this. Thanks!
Maybe you can see it with me next week … I was going to see it actually again—it was adorable and so funny!
This film had me at Halle Bailey. I knew this film would not suck. You proved that 💯
