Despite the extensive marketing and promotion that positioned this film as a must-see summer blockbuster, it ultimately fell short of expectations. The storyline was underdeveloped and lacked complexity, leaving viewers wanting more.
Krypto, the beloved canine companion known for his humor and charm, was surprisingly sidelined in this narrative. His absence was felt, especially since the film’s central conflict revolved around saving him after the antagonist, Krem, injured him. This focus on Krypto’s plight overshadowed the potential for a richer, more engaging story that could have explored the dynamics between Supergirl and her iconic cousin, Superman. Overall, the film missed the mark, failing to deliver the excitement and depth that fans had hoped for.
Krem of the Yellow Hills
Matthias Schoenaerts delivered a captivating performance as the film’s antagonist. He fully immersed himself in the role of a ruthless, vengeful killer, embodying a character driven by a deep-seated hatred and a relentless desire to inflict pain on anyone who crossed his path. His portrayal illustrated a villain whose heart is as cold as ice, revealing a singular focus on his own desires, which only intensified when thwarted. While he may not have reached the iconic status of Lex Luthor, he presented a significant challenge for Supergirl, showcasing a formidable presence that added tension to their encounters.
A Blast From The Super Past!
While it was enjoyable to see Superman’s brief appearances throughout the film, his return as a significant influence in Supergirl’s life felt crucial for connecting the narrative threads. Given that she was introduced as his cousin in his last film, and Krypto was a constant presence alongside Clark in the previous installment (2025 Superman), it made sense to intertwine these elements. The film functions almost like a prequel, revealing through Kara’s flashbacks the tragic fates of her planet and her parents, as well as her journey to the present, including how Krypto fits into her story. This movie serves as a backstory for both Superman and Supergirl, yet it doesn’t quite deliver the blockbuster experience many were hoping for. It’s important to temper expectations and approach the film without the anticipation of a grand spectacle. Personally, I felt a certain void in the film; it lacked the exhilarating energy that I, along with countless others, had eagerly anticipated.
Point well taken—if they had it, most likely it would have been…dare I say it—super?
Helen Slater’s 1984 Supergirl was a wide-eyed, naive, and deeply optimistic heroine, while Melissa Benoist’s Arrowverse version was a highly relatable, empathetic, and earnest champion. Even Sasha Calle did a great job as the 2023 DCEU “emo” version (shoutout to mi colombiana y parcera!). But the scrappy, traumatized, and edgier survivor that Milly Alcock plays here? I absolutely dig it.
The biggest missed opportunity in the film is how they utilized Jason Mamoa’s Lobo. I wish they had cut him loose a bit more or given him a much larger role. I didn’t care for Emmett J. Scanlan’s version from season 2 of Krypton.
While the overall narrative structure leaves a bit to be desired, the movie absolutely has its moments. The final act is pure visual eye candy—exactly the kind of massive, dazzling cosmic spectacle promised in the trailers.
