The Plot: It centers on a temporary small-town sheriff who uncovers dark mysteries after a local bank robbery.
….In Normal, Minnesota….
Where nothing happens, the population feels like it should be zero! This town reminded me of my visit to a similar small town in Ephraim, Utah. I distinctly remember seeing the Bank of Ephraim, the bowling alley, and just about everything else that Ephraim had to offer, which felt eerily similar to Normal. The Normal General Store, the Normal Diner, and all the little quirks of Normal brought back a flood of memories. Watching this movie was a vivid reminder of my experiences in Ephraim, and I can’t help but recall how the bowling alley there had only five lanes. I was taken aback, thinking, “What the hell, are you for real?” It was a stark contrast to the bustling bowling alleys I was used to.
Ulysses vs. Nobody
Granted, Odenkirk’s performance in this film bears a striking resemblance to his role in “Nobody,” yet there is a notable distinction. In “Nobody,” he embodies a character who takes the law into his own hands, embracing a vigilante persona. Conversely, in this film, he portrays an acting sheriff in a small, rural town. While he still possesses killer instincts, he demonstrates a conscience, choosing to let innocent people go rather than resorting to vigilantism. This subtle difference stood out to me as I watched the movie.
The film itself felt quite conventional and, to be frank, rather mundane. It lacked the excitement and intensity that one might expect from an action film. If I were you, I would think twice before spending money on a theater ticket for this one.
Wasn’t That Impressed!
The film has its merits, particularly the ending, which stands out as the most engaging part, featuring the action and intensity one might anticipate throughout. While some viewers may find the pacing slow, I can understand that perspective after watching it. However, I wouldn’t classify it as a must-see film that demands immediate attention. If you appreciate Bob Odenkirk and his craft, I would recommend giving it a watch, but perhaps not rushing to the theater.

We really enjoyed this movie!! Great actors and great characters. The story was entertaining and really kept me engaged. Thanks for your great review…
I am GLAD that you enjoyed it at least – that is all that matters!
I hear you, but I still want to see it. I loved him in “Nobody”
Oh, yes, he was GREAT in those 2 films—but he was nobody in this one! LOL
