The Catastrophic Pandemic Aftermath
The film appears to be a blend of “Contagion,” typical zombie outbreak films, and elements of the COVID-19 pandemic, all combined into one narrative. I understand why it was heavily marketed; however, it ultimately fell short of expectations. The setting in Colorado, where the film takes place, almost mirrors a scenario of a deadly outbreak with infected individuals.
One of the film’s key points is the infection mechanism, which is only briefly mentioned. It suggests that if someone coughs or sneezes on you, it could lead to your transformation and eventual demise. This aspect raises numerous questions and leaves significant gaps in the plot, making it a source of confusion for me and likely for many others as well. The film’s execution leaves much to be desired, as it struggles to provide clarity on the infection’s nature and the overall storyline.
Jasper IS The Title of the Film
Elordi’s only true companion was his dog, Jasper. When Jasper suddenly dies, it becomes clear that the film’s title is inspired by him. Each day, Hig misses Jasper profoundly. In his grief, he looks up at the stars, talking to and thinking about Jasper. This connection makes it evident why the film is called “The Dog Stars.”
Cima & Pops
Cima and Hig, two resilient characters, struggle to survive in a world ravaged by a devastating virus that has obliterated humanity. Their bond grows stronger as they navigate the dangers of this new reality, with Cima’s father being fiercely protective of her, as she represents his sole remaining connection to life and hope. The film captures their journey of survival and the emotional stakes involved, but ultimately, it is a narrative that may not warrant an immediate rush to see; rather, it is one to consider streaming at your leisure, as my review suggests.

I liked this movie. Its nice to see a dystopian style movie without all the zombies involved and have a heartfelt ending. I found it to be a very emotional movie with the guy trying to figure himself out in the middle of this.
Jacob Elordi should embark on a journey of self-discovery to confront his arrogance. It’s perplexing to see someone so harsh and aggressive in real life yet portray a caring character on screen. Typically, it’s the opposite; kind-hearted actors struggle with playing cruel roles.
