Plot: After prison, Kenna Rowan (Maika Monroe) attempts to reconnect with her young daughter but faces resistance from everyone except a bar owner, Ledger Ward (Tyriq Withers), with ties to her daughter, Diem Landry (Zoe Kosovic). As they grow closer, she must confront her past mistakes to build a hopeful future.
Reminders of Scotty Landry, aka’ Him
Scotty was undeniably the love of Kenna’s life, and their relationship was filled with deep affection and shared dreams. However, everything changed when they were involved in a tragic car accident that claimed Scotty’s life. In the aftermath, the community was quick to place the blame on Kenna, viewing her as the sole cause of the accident. This judgment stemmed from a lack of understanding and the emotional turmoil surrounding the incident.
The turning point came when Ledger, a friend of Scotty’s, took the time to listen to Kenna’s side of the story. As he learned more about the circumstances leading up to the accident, he began to realize that the narrative painted by the community was not only unfair but also deeply flawed. Ledger made it his mission to share the truth with others, advocating for Kenna and challenging the assumptions that had led to her vilification.
Having the Facts
While I won’t delve into the intricate details of the events that transpired on that tragic day, the film poignantly illustrates how assumptions can lead to catastrophic outcomes. It serves as a powerful reminder that when individuals hastily label someone as an “ass” based on their preconceived notions, it often reveals more about their own ignorance than the reality of the situation. This theme is particularly highlighted through the reactions of Scotty’s parents, who, overwhelmed by their profound grief, were unable to grasp the complete narrative surrounding the incident. The film underscores the critical importance of thoroughly investigating all the facts before arriving at judgments, especially when it pertains to the life of someone you hold dear. It encourages viewers to reflect on the complexities of human emotions and the necessity of empathy in the face of tragedy.
Diem Landry
All Kenna ever desired was to, as she expressed in the film’s trailer, finally meet the precious child that she and Scotty brought into the world. Isn’t that the universal dream of every expectant mother and father? To witness the miraculous birth of their child, to cradle them in their arms, shower them with unconditional love, and indulge them with affection? Tragically, Kenna was denied this fundamental experience. She gave birth to her daughter while incarcerated, a circumstance that robbed her of the chance to hold her newborn, to feel the warmth of her tiny hands, arms, and legs, or to experience any of the tender moments that define motherhood. The moment Diem was born, she was taken away, leaving Kenna with an unfulfilled longing.
As Diem grew, she sought answers about her mother and the circumstances surrounding her absence. However, her grandparents, Scotty’s parents, continuously fed her a series of falsehoods, choosing to shield her from the truth under the guise of protection. No matter how much time passed, they remained steadfast in their dishonesty, oblivious to the fact that they were keeping Diem from her biological mother, who posed no threat to her. Their misguided intentions stemmed from their own grief and a lack of understanding about the tragic accident that claimed Scotty’s life. They were more focused on their own pain and on safeguarding Diem than on providing her with the truth she deserved.
This film is an emotional rollercoaster, a true tear-jerker that resonates deeply with viewers. You can’t help but empathize with Kenna’s plight, feeling her heartache and yearning throughout the narrative. Maika Monroe delivers a powerful performance, embodying Kenna’s struggles with fierce authenticity, making her journey all the more poignant and relatable. The film ultimately serves as a reminder of the complexities of love, loss, and the desperate need for connection, leaving a lasting impact on the audience long after the credits roll.
